Victoza Liraglutide Injection Victoza (Liraglutide Injection) is a prescription medication belonging to the class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. It is primarily used to manage blood sugar levels and protect cardiovascular health. 📋 What is Victoza Used For? Type 2 Diabetes Management: It helps adults and children aged 10 and older improve blood sugar control along with diet and exercise. Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: It helps lower the risk of major cardiovascular events—such as stroke, heart attack, or cardiovascular death—in adults with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease. Note: It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes. ⚙️ How It Works Liraglutide mimics the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) to: Stimulate Insulin Release: Increases insulin secretion from the pancreas when blood glucose levels are high. Reduce Glucagon Secretion: Prevents the liver from producing excess sugar. Slow Gastric Emptying: Delays how quickly food leaves the stomach, which helps control post-meal blood sugar spikes and promotes a feeling of fullness. 💉 Administration & Storage Route: Administered once daily via subcutaneous injection (under the skin) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Timing: Can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Storage: Unopened pens should be kept refrigerated (2 ∘ C to 8 ∘ C). Once in use, the pen can be stored at room temperature or refrigerated for up to 30 days. ⚠️ Side Effects & Precautions Common Side Effects Nausea, vomiting, and stomach upset Diarrhea or constipation Decreased appetite Injection site redness or mild irritation Serious Warnings Thyroid Tumor Risk: Victoza carries a boxed warning regarding the potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. It should not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Pancreatitis: Severe abdominal pain spreading to the back requires immediate medical attention, as it may indicate inflammation of the pancreas. Hypoglycemia: Risk of low blood sugar increases significantly if combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Disclaimer: Always use Victoza under the guidance and prescription of a qualified medical professional.
