Overview
Met XL H 25 mg is a combination medication containing Metoprolol Succinate (25 mg) and Hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 mg). It is primarily prescribed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) when a single medication is insufficient to achieve target blood pressure levels.
Active Ingredients & How They Work
Metoprolol Succinate: A cardioselective beta-blocker that blocks adrenaline action on the heart, slowing the heart rate, reducing contraction force, and decreasing cardiac workload.
Hydrochlorothiazide: A thiazide diuretic (“water pill“) that acts on the kidneys to eliminate excess sodium and water, reducing overall blood volume and relaxing blood vessels.
Primary Uses
Hypertension Management: Lowers stubborn or moderate high blood pressure through dual mechanisms (cardiac slowing and fluid reduction).
Stroke and Heart Attack Prevention: Reduces long-term cardiovascular risks and organ damage associated with uncontrolled hypertension.
Important Usage Guidance
Timing: Usually taken orally once daily in the morning (with or without food) to prevent nighttime disruptions from increased urination due to the diuretic component.
Do Not Stop Suddenly: Abrupt discontinuation can trigger dangerous spikes in blood pressure or heart rate. Tapering must be supervised by a clinician.
Common Side Effects
Dizziness or lightheadedness (due to lowered blood pressure; rise slowly from sitting positions)
Fatigue or weakness
Increased thirst, dry mouth, or mild muscle cramps from electrolyte shifts
Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
